Help Us Collect Items for our Community

Updated: Aug 19, 2023

Please help us collect items for the programs we support. Below is a description of items we collect. If you would like to donate any of these items please contact us at sml.womens.club@gmail.com

Tab Top Program

How does it work?

We collect aluminum tab tops from any container (soda pop, soup, pet food, etc.) for Ronald Mc Donald House Charities of Southwest Virginia who works with a local recycling company to turn those tabs into money for families of hospitalized children.

Who can participate?

ANYONE! Because tab tops are common and easy to collect, any individual or group can participate. Many organizations, like Smith Mountain Lake Women's Club, support this project because it provides a terrific opportunity to make a genuine contribution to their community. Churches, hospitals, schools, college groups and businesses also participate in this easy program. Check out the Ronald McDonald House Tab Top Recycling Competition.

Why pull tab tops?

Tab tops from your soda, beverage or soup is a major fundraising effort for the RMHC-SWVA. This tiny tab top can help raise thousands of dollars to support the families of seriously ill or injured children receiving medical treatment in local Roanoke Valley area hospitals.

Operation Smile Bags

Operation Smile, an international children's medical charity, is dedicated to providing free reconstructive surgery for children who suffer from facial deformities, such as tumors, burns and cleft lips and cleft palates. SMLWC has been involved in this ministry for many years.

We contribute small, lightweight stuffed animals (no bigger than 6"), thin coloring books, boxes of 8 regular-size crayons, small hotel bottles of shampoo and shampoo plus conditioner, (no conditioner only bottles), hotel size bars of soap,, children's toothbrushes, small not expired toothpaste, and children-size washcloths (no lotion or mouthwash please).

Once a year, everything that has been collected is sent to Operation Smile headquarters. The items are then put into "smile" bags, which each child going into surgery will receive, and then shipped to third world countries in need.
